What is a simple management tool that aids in decision-making and decision making?

A decision matrix is an easy but powerful tool to aid managers in making informed decisions. It allows them to think through all possible options.

A decision matrix is a way of representing alternatives as rows and columns. This allows you to easily see how each choice affects others.

In this example, we have four possible alternatives represented by the boxes on the left side of the matrix. Each box represents an option. The top row represents the current state of affairs, and the bottom row is indicative of what would happen in the event that nothing were done.

The middle column displays the impact of selecting Option 1. This would result in an increase of sales of $2 million to $3million.

The results of choosing Option 2 and 3 can be seen in the columns below. These are positive changes - they increase sales by $1 million and $500 thousand respectively. These changes can also have negative effects. For instance, Option 2 increases cost by $100 thousand while Option 3 reduces profits by $200 thousand.

The final column shows results of choosing Option 4. This results in a decrease of sales by $1,000,000

A decision matrix has the advantage that you don’t have to remember where numbers belong. It's easy to see the cells and instantly know if any one of them is better than another.

The matrix already does all the work. It is as simple a matter of comparing all the numbers in each cell.

Here is an example of how a decision matrix might be used in your business.

Decide whether you want to invest more in advertising. This will allow you to increase your revenue by $5000 per month. However, this will mean that you'll have additional expenses of $10,000.

Look at the cell immediately below the one that states "Advertising" to calculate the net investment in advertising. It's $15,000. Advertising is a worthwhile investment because it has a higher return than the costs.

What are the most common errors made by managers?

Sometimes managers make it harder for their employees than is necessary.

They may not be able to delegate enough responsibility to staff or provide adequate support.

In addition, many managers lack the communication skills required to motivate and lead their teams.

Managers can set unrealistic expectations for their employees.

Managers may choose to solve every problem all by themselves, instead of delegating to others.

How To

What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing techniques are used to reduce waste while increasing efficiency by using structured methods. These processes were created by Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan in the 1980s. The aim was to produce better quality products at lower costs. Lean manufacturing seeks to eliminate unnecessary steps and activities in the production process. It is composed of five fundamental elements: continuous improvement; pull systems, continuous improvements, just-in–time, kaizen, continuous change, and 5S. It is a system that produces only the product the customer requests without additional work. Continuous improvement is constantly improving upon existing processes. Just-in-time refers to when components and materials are delivered directly to the point where they are needed. Kaizen is continuous improvement. This can be achieved by making small, incremental changes every day. Fifth, the 5S stand for sort, set up in order to shine, standardize, maintain, and standardize. These five elements can be combined to achieve the best possible results.

Lean Production System

Six key concepts are the basis of lean production:

  • Flow - focus on moving material and information as close to customers as possible;
  • Value stream mapping - break down each stage of a process into discrete tasks and create a flowchart of the entire process;
  • Five S's – Sort, Put In Order Shine, Standardize and Sustain
  • Kanban – visual signals like colored tape, stickers or other visual cues are used to keep track inventory.
  • Theory of constraints: Identify bottlenecks and use lean tools such as kanban boards to eliminate them.
  • Just-in-time - deliver components and materials directly to the point of use;
  • Continuous improvement - incremental improvements are made to the process, not a complete overhaul.
