What is Lean Manufacturing?

Lean Manufacturing processes are used to reduce waste and improve efficiency through structured methods. These processes were created by Toyota Motor Corporation, Japan in the 1980s. It was designed to produce high-quality products at lower prices while maintaining their quality. Lean manufacturing eliminates unnecessary steps and activities from a production process. It consists of five basic elements: pull systems, continuous improvement, just-in-time, kaizen (continuous change), and 5S. It is a system that produces only the product the customer requests without additional work. Continuous improvement is constantly improving upon existing processes. Just-in–time refers when components or materials are delivered immediately to their intended destination. Kaizen refers to continuous improvement. It is achieved through small changes that are made continuously. Fifth, the 5S stand for sort, set up in order to shine, standardize, maintain, and standardize. These five elements can be combined to achieve the best possible results.

The Lean Production System

The lean production system is based on six key concepts:

  • Flow: The goal is to move material and information as close as possible from customers.
  • Value stream mapping is the ability to divide a process into smaller tasks, and then create a flowchart that shows the entire process.
  • Five S's - Sort, Set In Order, Shine, Standardize, and Sustain;
  • Kanban - use visual signals such as colored tape, stickers, or other visual cues to keep track of inventory;
  • Theory of constraints - identify bottlenecks in the process and eliminate them using lean tools like kanban boards;
  • Just-in-time - deliver components and materials directly to the point of use;
  • Continuous improvement: Make incremental improvements to the process instead of overhauling it completely.
